Energy for the development of India: Social and economic benefits from local sustainable energy projects
Organisations with market-based solutions, both for and non profit, in the local sustainable energy sector have attracted strong interest in fighting poverty, protecting the environment and developing India. Direct benefits to the poor from local sustainable energy organisations can be substantial including: better well-being through reduced health risks, increased opportunities for educational and social activities, better communications and information access, savings on energy expenditure and revenue generation opportunities. All these benefits can improve livelihoods and reduce vulnerability and so contribute to poverty reduction, while reducing carbon emissions.

Successful business models: looking at innovative ways enterprises have scaled up in the energy sector and ways in which emerging business models can grow
Successful organisations have managed to build innovative business models tailored to the special circumstances of markets where they operate. ‘Hybrid’ business models combine commercial and non-profit attributes to reach poor and low-income users and achieve benefits. Some Ashden Award winners are classed as non-profit organisations and some as for-profit businesses. However, nearly all employ business models that combine both market and non-market approaches and financial instruments to reach poor and low-income users and achieve other desired co-benefits.
